Enjoy my last power poll and I will be right here sharing my sports thoughts. I love talking sports so join me!
Last Week Conference Championship Weekend
2 1 New England The Pats played about exactly as I thought they would.  They were overwhelmed and unable to deal with Jacksonville for the first half and into 4th.  They took advantage of being able to hold all game and have no flags thrown and in the end they beat the Jags.  It is nearly a foregone conclusion they will ‘win’ the Super Bowl because the NFL is letting them win.
4 2 Philadelphia Played a great game and win the chance to go and have their ass handed to them by the Super Bowl champion Patriots.  It is already over and done, New England will win.  The end.
3 3 Jacksonville The Jags had the best game they could have and they led for over 55 minutes of the game but when it came down to it Bortles couldn’t make the plays and they lost.  The Jags can be very positive about their season. They had a super year and with their youth and talent I think they could be on the cusp of long term greatness.
1 4 Minnesota Gave their emotional all beating New Orleans and had nothing left and it showed.
not much going on with teams eliminated this week.
5 New Orleans Payton is a putz for making fun of the Skol.  This is at least twice he has been classless and it is tarnishing his legacy as a bounty hunting scumbag and making it worse.
6 Pittsburgh Pittsburgh has gotten rid of the O/C.  That is the best thing they could do.
7 Atlanta
8 Tennessee Named a new Head Coach after canning Mularkey and doing it too late to get McDaniels.

NFL Power Rankings

Last Week Division Weekend
1 1 Minnesota That was a heck of a battle and it came down to the most exciting play in Minnesota football history but the Vikes won and now they go to Philly and a couple of cheesesteaks later and they can host the Super Bowl!  What a great win!
2 2 New England Took down the Titans in non unexpected fashion.  Outplayed them on O and D and got help from the officials on at least 2 bad calls that were given to New England.  SNAFU time for the Pats.
6 3 Jacksonville Way to go Jacksonville!  Universally overlooked and with nothing to lose they brought their O, their D and their swagger and took down the Steelers.  It was said early that NE didn’t wanna face these guys.  Well –  get ready New England, a different sort of opponent is coming to town.
8 4 Philadelphia The Eagles tried their best to lose this game but they just couldn’t make Atlanta call the right play or execute them either.  Foles got the win but didn’t put Wentz on notice his job is in jeopardy and I don’t see how this Eagle team can beat the Vikings.
5 5 New Orleans The Saints were beaten down, got back into it with play reminescent of bounty gate and then they took a lead and then they lost and they can go home and chew on that for the rest of the year.  Good riddance to the cheap shot artists.
3 6 Pittsburgh The Steelers looked bad on D, bad on O calls and bad on mailing it in.  To be fair the Steelers often played like this all year and either barely eked out wins or lost.  They lost and it was a fitting way to end a badly inconsistent season.  If any changes are to come, the OC must be fired.
4 7 Atlanta The Falcons looked like a lost dog and once more over thought and under performed.  They had myriad shots to win the game and blew every single chance.  Matty Ice is in the end and in the red zone and with the pressure on….Matty Melt.  Julio Jones can’t be considered elite if he can’t make the tough catch that wins a playoff game.
7 8 Tennessee Scored one TD to start and then never were in the game again.  No answer for Pat O and Brady and no answer for the refs calling the game against them.  They didn’t belong in this game and they lost.  Add to this a gutless firing of their coach after giving him talk of an extension.
only noteworthy occurrences commented on for teams finished…
9 Carolina One or two days after Rivera said no changes to his staff – his OC and DC were canned.
10 LA Rams
11 Kansas City
12 Buffalo
13 San Francisco
14 Seattle Got a new OC.  Unless Schottenheimer can block this may not help them.
15 Baltimore
16 LA Chargers
17 Arizona
18 Cincinnati
19 Tampa Bay
20 Chicago Have hired a great young OC and got their great DC to stay…something nice is building in Chi town.
21 Miami
22 Oakland Word is that the NFL is investigating a possible violation of the Rooney Rule in the hiring of Gruden.  The Rooney Rule meant well and had great intentions but all it has become is the frequent flyer programs for one or two African American Co-ordinators.  They get flown around the country for ‘interviews’ and then the team hires who they intended to.  Oakland followed the letter of the rule just made it look as stupid as it is.
23 Washington
24 Detroit Hiring NE DC Patricia.  If he bring discipline and a fire hose then the Lions can improve.
25 Dallas
26 Indianapolis
27 NY Giants Will it be Shurmer and Keenum to NYG with a Rosen draft pick?  Will be something to watch.
28 Denver
29 Houston
30 NY Jets
31 Green Bay
32 Cleveland Hired a former Packer exec to help build this mess from the ground up AGAIN or STILL.

Hey NFL fans!

Plenty of changes have come to the NFL with free agency.  Latavius Murray is now the feature back of the Vikes and our resident Vikings Fan is over the moon!  Glennon is the QB in Chicago and let me speak for every BEARS fan everywhere when I say anyone or anything is better than Cutler.  Kendell Wright is an interesting WR for Chicago.  Marshawn Lynch out of retirement to Oakland would be a story.  If the Giants are paying J-P-P-one-hand all that cash then they expect more from him than I do.

Best line I heard this week from Dan Patrick’s show – with the assault charges dropped against Revis – now there is no record of Revis hitting anyone in 2016!

Oh and the Pats seem primed to win again and Jerry is doing Romo right by stringing him along!

Thoughts?  Tons other stuff has happened.  Check out your fave NFL source for all the moves!

“Inexplicably the #Vikings can’t find the end zone”: Mr. N’s Week 14 Power Poll #NFL #Rankings

NFL Power Rankings

1.            New England Patriots (3) – The Pats came out with good D and just enough O to have a nice lead and the game looked over.  Then a shootout broke out.  Lucky for New England Brady is very hard to beat and he tore up a previously good pass D for over 400 yards.  The Pats won and they sadly sit atop now.

2.            Kansas City Chiefs (4) – Chiefs had the home field and that is often all you need on Thursday.  They were able to hit a few passes and that was that.  Their D was able to handle Oakland tho the loss of their best tackler probably guts them the rest of the year.  The Chiefs won but now may be much worse off after that injury so TNF killed them too.  Congrats on the win.

3.            Dallas Cowboys (1) – The Cowboys picked a bad time to have a bad game.  They went on the road to a heated division rival who was suffering injuries and laid an egg.  Dak looked ordinary and tossed 2 golden picks and took the fire out of the O quickly.  Fumbles and sacks followed.  That O line, oft vaunted, couldn’t hold up an injury damaged Giant pass rush.  They managed only 1 TD and let in more than that and lost.  They need to give their head a shake as it doesn’t get easier now.

4.            Detroit Lions (5) – The Lions have been in the driver’s seat from the start.  Good O and some good D and they are well in control of this match.  The Lions failed to ever just put away the Bears.  They self-defeated some but then watched Chicago match em self-defeat for self-defeat.  They see sawed and led then trailed then pulled ahead and held on for dear life.  Thank the Good Lord Detroit won.  If Geek Bay can lose then all will be flowers and sunshine. (it isn’t)

5.            Pittsburgh Steelers (7) – Playing in the snow the Steelers have concentrated with their strengths and used LeVeon Bell to destroy the Bills and are well out in front.  They thought using Bell was good so they did it over and over and over.  The Steelers were well out in front and played some prevent and let in a cheap TD late but to no avail.  The game was over and Pittsburgh won.  They at least temporarily lead the AFC North.

6.            Oakland Raiders (2) – The Raiders have been spectacular this year and this was a premium matchup to determine division title, wild card and even home field.  That would have been incredible…at 1pm on Sunday.  Unfortunately for the whole football world they were forced to waste this matchup in the garbage that is TNF.  Oakland was obviously hurt by the short week.  One of their key OL men couldn’t get back in 4 days and their key secondary parts were down due to the SHORT WEEK.  They couldn’t stop a speedy receiver and down they went.  It means the Cheatriots probably have home field now and KC leads the division and this was shameful.  I would have loved to have seen this matchup for real.  Oakland lost.

7.            Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9) – This titanic clash lived up to the preview.  The Bucs O had some problems getting the ball moving a lot today but the D came to play.  They scored a little when they could but they got golden turnover after golden turnover and they held on a for a key win.  This is a tough little team when Winston, Martin and the D are all going.

8.            New York Giants (10) – Well the Giants needed this win and gave their all.  They put together an effort that was terrific.  This was a classic the sum was better than the parts.  The secondary shut down Dez, the pass rush got home against a ‘storied’ O line.  Eli was able to hit OBG for a key TD and the G-men pulled out a win.  The good news is they continue to be 2 up on Green Bay.

9.            Atlanta Falcons (11) – Well this is the third week in a row when a team just had a live practice against the Rams.  I think Atlanta took the same tours as New England.  They got to see swank pads, saw Kanye and Beyoncé’s west coast pad, did some body surfing, drove the 101 in convertibles and served a 40 burger on the just deplorable Rams.  A walk over win.

10.          Baltimore Ravens (8) –   The Ravens were never in the game for the first 30 and by the time they got into it they were down by 14.  They did outscore NE by 7 in the second half but that was 7 too little.  Now they are out of the division lead and could be in trouble to even make the playoffs.

11.          Houston Texans (19) – A slow start for Houston but the D has played hard and got the game under control.  The pretty crappy Texan O has got something going and they are in a good position at the half with the lead.  The Texans managed to have their D bend but not break.  They managed to play good enough O to have a lead they never let go of.  A superb win that puts them on a collision course with the Titans.

12.          Washington Redskins (13) – Classic Washington is struggling against the Eagles and it took well into the 3rd quarter before they could get the O firing up.  The D is playing ok but they are lucky to not be way behind…they need to show more intensity.   The Redskins showed intensity in the wrong way with vicious cheap shots.  They practically killed Darren Sproles.  Cousins managed to get the key late TD and the D held on for a much-needed win.  That helps their playoff hopes immensely.

13.          Miami Dolphins (15) – Playing in tight battle with Arizona.  The O is struggling to get much going but the D is playing well but you have a feeling the game could open up quick.  Turnovers will be key here.  The Dolphins battled and had a lead.  The late injury to Tannehill should have by all rights destroyed them.  In a gutsy performance, the much-aged Matt Moore got the job done and won the game for the Fins.  They are still mathematically alive but the road to the post season is a tough one without their starting QB.  A good win.

14.          Cincinnati Bengals (18) – A ho hum match but credit to Cincy for giving it some effort playing a bad team.  They are well out in front and tho not blowing out the Browns, this is probably over already. The game was over.  Cincy simply was in control and they did let in a TD but nothing of note.  A win over a bad team that counts as a win, over a bad team.

15.          Arizona Cardinals (14) – Playing in a tight battle with Miami.  The O is struggling to get much going but the D is playing well but you have a feeling the game could open up quick.  Turnovers will be key here.  Palmer paved a golden road with turnovers.  The Cards O totally sucked for the first half but then got some points later to tie the game.  Inexplicably the D, which is supposed to be good, couldn’t stop Miami’s last drive and they lost.  Stick the fork in the Cards they are now playing for paychecks and draft picks.  Ugly loss that lands right at the feet of Carson Fitzpatrick Palmer.

16.          New Orleans Saints (16) – The Saints had everything to lose in this game and they lost it all.  Brees was terrible and turnovers were golden and he did that over and over.  They played pretty good D but the O could do very little and they really lost the special teams battle too.  A bad loss that effectively ends their hopes for playoffs.

17.          Tennessee Titans (21) –  The Titans have early on found that there is much ado about nothing in regards to the Bronco D.  They have not only run all over them but the BEYOND uber vaunted Von Miller is a non-factor as Tennessee completes any number of passes.  The Titan D has shut down the moribund Bronco O and the Titans have it well in hand.  The Titan D seemed to go into a bit of a pass prevent and they let Denver roll all over the field.  They let in lots of pass yards and one TD but when it came down to it, the Titans D made the stop and they won.  The AFC South may yet go through Tennessee.  Great win.

18.          Denver Broncos (12) – Well Denver can’t run, can’t throw and today can’t play D.  The fact that they sit in a Wild Card slot for now is more indicative of luck than talent.  Unless they find something here they may not be in the Wild Card as of 4pm Sunday.  The Broncos had some ability passing but only could score one TD and a FG.  They had a shot late but couldn’t do it and now I sit to see if they can be booted out of the playoff spot again.  What a poor team.

19.          Seattle Seahawks (6) – I have said here for years that TURNOVERS ARE GOLD.  Seattle should be embarrassed.  Russell Wilson chose week 14 to go to Green Bay, on the ‘game of the week’ and laid a 4 Pick egg????  What a terrible effort.  Simply losing one starting safety shouldn’t gut a team.  The utter lack of ability and talent shown here makes me embarrassed I rated this team in the top ten.  A humiliating loss.  Please, the sake of my sanity, can the talking heads stop talking about Seattle being a team to beat in the NFC.  Horrible loss.

20.          Buffalo Bills (17) – An offense that could do nothing for most of the first half and a D that couldn’t stop the run and now the Bills are well behind.  The Bills could do nothing when Pittsburgh was trying.  Once prevent started they did get some offense but too little way too late.  A loss that further sinks the Bills.  The word that Rexy and the ownership are not getting along is bad.  The Bills are building something and need consistency.  To dump Rex and bring in a new guy could set them back another 3 years or more.

21.          Minnesota Vikings (23) – Inexplicably the Vikings can’t find the end zone.  They have moved between the 20’s but managed only FGs.  On the positive their kicker can kick field goals.  The D has held the Jags to FGs but this game is way too closer than it should be.  Minnesota never got it going today.  They even trailed the Jags for a while.  They did get the lead back and the D held on and they won.  An ugly win but it helps keep Green Bay looking in from the outside.

22.          Green Bay Packers (24) – Rodgers has had a good day in the snow.  Multiple TDs, racking up tons of points.  A terrible, terrible, terrible D has managed to get tons of golden turnovers and they have won this game going away.  They may yet reach the playoffs but I am still going to be sticking pins in my Aaron Rodgers doll.

23.          San Diego Chargers (22) – Well San Diego was knocked out of playoff consideration last week and it shows this week.  They have shown no ability to play today.  They have been beset with injuries and lack of production on O and lack of ability on D.  Can they show anything today?  Rivers showed they still have heart.  They tried and tried and got it within a couple of scores but that was all they could do.  They lost it badly and their time in San Diego isn’t going to end memorably.

24.          New York Jets (25) – A terrible start and this team, on the ropes with sinking morale, found themselves ready to be blown out by a terrible team.  The Jets didn’t give up.  The D got their wind and started playing well.  Petty grew into an NFL QB on the field in this game.  He started making reads and finding receivers.  He drove them for points by the 3 and then to a key TD and then to a game tying FG.  In OT, he drove the team to a winning TD.  Petty is very possibly the future at QB for the Jets.  If nothing else, he is a HELL of a lot better than Geno.  Nice win.

25.          Carolina Panthers (26) – Having a party at home today. The Panthers are using being virtually eliminated from the playoffs to inspire them.  Great D, solid O and they are shutting out the Bolts for most of the first half.  This game seems over at the half.  The Panthers were never challenged and simply put away a San Diego team who never really had a chance as the injuries piled up.  A meaningless win for a team that isn’t very good.

26.          Indianapolis Colts (20) – Well the Colts scored first and then Luck got picked and the Colt D has shown its ability *they don’t have any* and they find themselves down two possessions in a critical division game and need to step up in the 2nd half.  The Colts got it going a little in the 2nd half and made it close.  They tried and brought it to within one possession but when it was on the line they couldn’t make a stop and catch up and lost.  They now are third in their division and their defense is exposed as rotten.  Houston has no O and they beat up this CRAPPY COLT D.

27.          Chicago BEARS (27) – The Bears are trying but they are what they are.  They have some good rush O, some moments of pass O, some penalties, some bad D, some ok D.  They are down and probably out already.  Barkley and the Bears played pretty good on O.  Getting well north of a century in penalties didn’t help.  They had one shot late to stop Detroit and failed. They had one shot late to win it and failed.  They lost and are eliminated and are maybe playing for a top pick.  They need a QB but who is the best one now?

28.          Philadelphia Eagles (28) – Decent effort by the piss poor Eagles.  They lead for more than half the game and are still keeping this close.  They could steal a win here.  The Eagles gave their all on O and D.  They kept it close and lead til late but their D got beat once for a big one.  The O got stopped on the last drive and down they went.  Another loss for a team that loses a lot.

29.          Los Angeles Rams (29) – I don’t think LA has ever seen 3 weeks of terrible football like this team has had now in a row.  This was the third humiliating loss.  They never had a chance and look like they are overmatched in every area of the game.  This franchise needs to hit the reset and judge every player and coach and see who has any future and can the rest.  Just about the worst team but for SF/Jacks/Clev.  Terrible loss.

30.          San Francisco 49ers (30) – The Niners couldn’t have hoped for a better start.  The smoke from pregame barely cleared and they were out in front by 2 touchdowns.  The offense didn’t manage to do much else for the next 58 minutes or in OT.  The D played ok for a while but little by little they started to give and give and after FG after FG they started to get dissected by a young QB.  They managed only 3 points more but let in 17 and went to OT.  They then lost.  Well this is a terrible team and they are pretty poorly led by a pretty poor coach.

31.          Jacksonville Jaguars (31) – The Jags are playing out the string but playing pretty good D today.  The O can’t get anything but FGs but they are in this game and they have no business being in it so good effort so far.  A brave and gutsy effort by Jacksonville.  Well played *for them* on D and O.  They took a late lead but couldn’t hold it and lost a close one.  A game effort in the loss.

32.          Cleveland Browns (32) – Some in the organization actually thought RGIII might show he can be the QB for 2017.  Some said he might get them a win today.  They might need to score a point or two.  They are being shut out and look all the world like a team steaming towards 0-16.  Note to Joe Haden, I too think Alabama could shut out the Browns.  The Browns weren’t shut out, which was good.  They lost again which is how they go.  They simply have no shot at beating anyone and I really sincerely wonder if they can win one in 2017.

There you have it, as always I would love it if someone just reads all the way through my ramblings and also will accept money, preferably tens and twenties!  Any thoughts, comments, arguments or agreements are always welcome!

Mr. N’s NFC South Preview #NFL #NFLThoughts #NFLTrainingCamp

NFC South

Carolina Panthers led the way last year and this year have somewhat of a nice schedule and most pieces back including Benjamin at WR to have another nice road to the playoffs.

If all goes well they could end up 14-2 and have home field throughout
If they lose a few then they go 13-3 and just win the division and maybe have no bye as there are a LOT of 13-3 NFC teams.
If they struggle they will still go 11-5

I like 13-3 and third seed so they are home against a Wild Card team.

New Orleans Saints have a superb offense but really need the D to show up some or this will not be fun and I don’t think the D will show up.

If they find D to go with scoring then 10-6 is on the plate
if the D does what it can then 8-8 is what they will be
If the O can’t work either then 5-11 is that nightmare

I say 8-8 and watch the fun as Brees throws for 5000 yards

Tampa Bay Buccaneers are back with Winston a year older and maybe he can connect with his WR a bit better, especially with long passes. The D needs to step up to.

If they find it all comes together then I say 9-7 is their record.
if they have some Winston and D issues then 7-9
If the D is bad then 6-10.

I expect 7-9 which is one better than last year and perhaps playoffs in 2017.

Atlanta Falcons won their first 5 last year and I don’t think they may win 5 in 2016. This is a team led by a poor excuse for a QB and has issues at WR and O line and D. Boy do they have D issues.

If they have success then they could be 7-9.
If they are what they really are then 4-12 is it.
If it blows up then 3-13 is likely.

I give them 4-12 and another ugly year in Atlanta.

2016 NFC North Preview #NFL #NFLThoughts #TrainingCamp

NFC north

Hey everyone, normally I start AFC East and go by the numbers but if the NFL Network can spend 80% of its training camp coverage on the 4-12 Dallas Cowboys I get to start with a preview of my favorite team’s division.

The Green Bay Packers appear to be the class again. Rodgers seems healthy * a hit in the head away from retiring *, Nelson appears back, Their RB has lost weight, their D is younger and their schedule is easy.

If it all breaks for them, 14-2, if it’s a bad year with injuries 10-6. I suggest 13-3 and they win the division.

The Minnesota Vikings are coming off a great year that ended with a bad kick. They have gotten more weapons on offense and the D is still solid. AP is a child beater but seems still capable. The sked here isn’t bad either (whole division plays the NFC Least so that is a good thing).

I think the Vikes could get 11-5 and maybe sneak the division but they could also find Teddy can’t get it done and fall to 7-9. I bet 10-6 and in the wild card discussion.

My CHICAGO BEARS are back and are once more trying to fix the O line, get the D better and hope Cutler can play decent. They could have weapons on O and they could have better O and D. The Sked is easy.

If the BEARS find it all they might get to 10-6 and be in the wild card talk. It could all blow up and be Cutler’s last year with 6-10. I think 9-7 and just out of the playoffs.

Detroit Lions are a team that can’t take another losing season so this will be painful for them. They have a new line on O, no receivers to speak of, questionable RB who fumbles a lot and a QB who is a joke. The D is missing pieces and has about one great LB and CB and that it’s it. No schedule helps this hot mess.

If they have a great year they are 6-10, a bad year will end 4-12. I think they are 4-12.

AFC South next…

MR N’s #NFL NFC North 2015 Preseason Preview‏ #nflthoughts #nflnetwork

NFC north

Green Bay Packers – The first thing I wonder is how does a team that continually drafts late every round build a team of superstars on offense?  How does every other team miss on the Cobbs/Nelsons/Lacys/Rodgers etc?  The Pack are loaded on Offense with every player coming back.  The D has had changes, especially in the back end, but they drafted to meet those needs.  The Pack just needs the D to be mid talented (which they are) and their O to be virtually unstoppable and watch the results pore in.  They have a tough schedule but like the Ravens, they know how to give as good as they get.  If they get inspired D they could win 12 games.  If they D gets pushed about they might only win 10.  I split the difference.  This team goes 11-5 and is at least one of the top 3 in the NFC with a shot at Super Bowl 50.

Minnesota Vikings – The Vikings finally have a franchise QB for the first time in recent memory and an all pro child beater (not to mention Running back) plus depth of varying degrees of talent at WR and TE.  The Vikes O line has already took a hit with their RT going down for the season in the pre-season.  Their 3rd round OL pick must step up immediately.  The D under Zimmer greatly improved in the first year and should only get better with the excellent talent taken in the 1st and 2nd round of the draft.  Like every team in this division, they face a tough schedule.  There are a few spots they can take advantage of and I think if the O is dynamic and the D stalwart the Vikes could win 10 games.  If the O line can’t protect Teddy then they might struggle to reach 8-8.  I pick mid point here too. 9-7. That will give them a very outside chance at a Wild Card but this team is looking and trending upwards for their new stadium in 2016.

Detroit Lions – The Lions were a picked up flag from being in the Divisional round of the playoffs for the first time in at least this century.  The loss of Suh is significant but my prevailing opinion is that he is about two on-field misconducts away from a season long suspension and that is a when not an if.  To task Ngata and a kid to help replace the production on the D line is not a bad option.  The Lions still have a decent D line, a solid LB corps and a growing solid secondary.  This is a D that can influence a game.  Stafford needs to continue to tighten up his passing game.  Megatron is still elite but aging gracefully.  Ebron needs a healthy sophomore season to give Stafford more options.  Golden Tate is the younger star on this receiving corps.  They have Joique Bell and draftee Ameer Abdullah to give them a great RB combo finally.  Their special teams is a problem and they need consistency from both FG and Punts and some semblance of effective play on both coverage and returns.  This could still be an issue.  The Lions are strong but their schedule is brutal.  They will be pushed almost every week up to their bye and if they can end 4-4 at the half that will be an accomplishment.  Pulling off another 4-4 post bye against a second half schedule that is also brutal will be a win for them.  If they can play lights out and Stafford can dominate with the passing game and the special teams do the job – they could win 11.  I don’t see that against this schedule so I think 8-8 is the result for a team better than that record.

Chicago Bears – The bringing in of a new regime at Head Coach and GM bodes well for a franchise that has struggled for nearly a decade.  Fox should be able to bring success to the Windy City but it doesn’t appear it will be in 2015.  The loss of 1st round pick WR Kevin White for at least the first 6 if not the whole 16 games is a big hit.  Having Jay Cutler still at QB is a millstone to success of the team.  They are switching to the 3-4 D (they drafted Goldman to play NT) and this kind of switch usually creates growing pains.  The Bears have 3 ok WR (Jeffrey is a star with health and a good QB), a durable if aging RB and a talented is prissy TE and they have 2/5 of a pro bowl line.  They get to play their own improving division and they get to play the NFC West.  Yeah.  Here is their deal.  If all goes really well they will be 7-9.  If things go badly they might be 3-13.  I think my sad sack 2015 Bears will be 4-12.

There you have it, as always I appreciate any thoughts, comments, arguments or agreements!

MR N’s #NFL NFC North Preview‏

NFC north

NFL Preview 2014

Division: NFC North
Team: Chicago Bears
Coach: Jim Trestman
QB: Jay Cutler

Offensive outlook: This is an offense set to explode. Cutler has a myriad of weapons with in my view the best WR pair in football, Forte and a great young rookie RB and solid TE and a vastly improved line. They will put up points like Trestman did in the CFL.

Defensive outlook: The D has improved with free agency pickups and draft picks. They have a strong pass rush, solid LB with depth and an improving secondary. They will get better as the season goes on.

Schedule projection: The schedule isn’t too hard and this team can outscore most. I see the high bar being an incredible 13-3. I think they will be no worse than 11-5.

Division: NFC North
Team: Detroit Lions
Coach: Jim Caldwell
QB: Matthew Stafford

Offensive outlook: Stafford can toss the rock with the best of them and he has Megatron. They have issues at RB but have improved TE. It remains to be seen if Golden Tate is a worthy #2 WR. They will do alright but expect mistakes.

Defensive outlook: Others really like this D, I don’t. I see continued lack of control, discipline and poor LB and secondary play expected. They will not do well.

Schedule projection: If they excel against their own division they might win 8 but I see a 6-10 year for the Lions.

Division: NFC North
Team: Green Bay Packers
Coach: Mike McCarthy
QB: Aaron Rodgers

Offensive outlook: Rodgers is amazing, Lacy is coming on as a great RB, they have solid WR (Rodgers makes almost anyone look good at receiving) but their line must be improved to keep Rodgers healthy. They will score but sometimes they will stumble.

Defensive outlook: The Packers D is a lot of reputation and they need a big year from vets and they need immediate help from youngsters in the poor secondary. I think they will be a bit better but still beatable more often than they want.

Schedule projection: If they do amazing and the D and O click they could win 10. I think they will win 9 and lose 7 and watch the playoffs on TV.

Division: NFC North
Team: Minnesota Vikings
Coach: Mike Zimmer
QB: Teddy Bridgewater/Matt Cassel

Offensive outlook: If they start Bridgewater right away they will have issues but gain great experience. If Cassel is the QB they will have issues and circle the bowl. AP is their only weapon and that doesn’t win many games in an outdoor stadium.

Defensive outlook: The Vikings are hoping the big draft picks of the last few years are ready to roll. Hunter Smith is a star at Safety but the Vikes are lacking much star power now and will be pushed around.

Schedule projection: This could be a long year for Vikings Fans. I think it could be 3-13 without much effort. They probably start 0-5 for sure. I will be kind and suggest 4-12.

NFC North projected:

Chicago Bears 11-5
Green Bay Packers 9-7
Detroit Lions 6-10
Minnesota Vikings 4-12

Next up the NFC South!

MR N’s #NFL Week 6 Power Poll‏

NFL Power Rankings

1. Denver Broncos (1) – Played as good as they had to. Was close for a short time but they won going away.

2. Kansas City Chiefs (3) – Poor offense to start the game. Great D, good special teams and just enough offense…The KC recipe for undefeated success.

3. Green Bay Packers (5) – Defense good early. Rodgers just barely able to get it done. A tough team win.

4. Seattle Seahawks (6) – Had a tough game at home. They had to battle to win. Not a great win but a win nonetheless.

5. San Francisco 49ers (7) – Gave Arizona a shot early but then they got some decent D…a good catch or two, some good runs and it was a win.

Staley vs Bloodline

6. New England Patriots (8) – Played badly enough to lose. Aaron Dropson has gotta be the biggest case of stonehands in the history of the NFL. Someone buy that kid some stickem because he is abominable. They amazingly had a gutsy come from behind win that was one for the ages but not one they get much credit for. Any decent team woulda put them away after that last Brady pick.

7. New Orleans Saints (2) – Played well on the road until the last 2 minutes. In the end their ‘vaunted’ offense (heck I have vaunted them this year) couldn’t get 10 yards to win the game and then the D couldn’t make a stop.

8. Indianapolis Colts (4) – What can be said…they faced some powder blues, it was a road game, it was Luck’s first prime time game for Monday night…The Colts basically stunk out the joint. They now face Denver…play better guys or else.

9. Cincinnati Bengals (10) – Solid game played by all aspects of the team in the first half. A late second half collapse lead to OT but they managed to pull out a pretty unimpressive win.

10. San Diego Chargers (12) – Rocked the Colts all night. Strong offense, solid D and awesome powder blues. Let’s see them do it again!

11. Miami Dolphins (9) – on the bye. They now hopefully are getting healthy and figuring out the ‘what’ that was lately wrong and going back to the ‘right’ of the first three games…or this stay in a top 1/3 spot is very short term and they face a lengthy fall with another loss.

12. Detroit Lions (14) – Good D, poor O. Second half Offense was suddenly good and the team won it going away.

13. Dallas Cowboys (17) – Good Offense but D is now suffering severely from injuries and the team is still just not that good.

14. Chicago BEARS (19) – D limited by injuries, shredded by running game. Some effective turnovers created by the D and Cutler was excellent and it was a nice short week win.

15. Baltimore Ravens (11) – D good early. The team simply can’t score enough to win.

16. Tennessee Titans (13) – Gave their all on the road. Simply are not good enough without Locker. A good try.

17. Cleveland Browns (16) – Got it done early. The Cleveland D let them down and although it was a fair try by the OFF it wasn’t enough.

Cleveland Brown

18. Arizona Cardinals (15) – The game was winnable but they let SF pull away. Palmer is just way too Palmer-like to give them a chance to win on the road.

19. Buffalo Bills (20) – Poor decisions on and off the field. Great effort but they came up just short.

20. St. Louis Rams (25) – Jumped to a nice lead, the Offense roared and the D put up points too. A very impressive total team road win by blowout. Well done.

21. Washington Redskins (21) – RGIII showed more finally but sadly he still can’t play D for the Skins…neither can the Skins D. That is their issue. They would have fallen some this week but there are just too many bad teams. They have to take a number and play worse. Maybe next week against the BEARS?

22. Philadelphia (27) – D struggled as usual. A great game by Foles led to an inspired offense that put up the needed points and got them a good win. Now the question in Philly will be how long will a hammy keep out Vick? Perhaps he is being Wally Pipped by Foles now.

23. Carolina Panthers (30) – Blew away a flat team. Their second great game this year. Caaaaaam was terrific. A great win but we really need to see some consistency from the Panthers. Who is this team?

24. Pittsburgh Steelers (29) – They seem awfully old, however, Big Ben got it going, completed an impressive percentage of his passes. His accuracy coupled with decent D play got them a nice win as they schooled another rookie QB.

25. Houston Texans (18) – Offense issues (hint…they suck), D troubles (um…where is that pro-bowl shutdown D?). The team collapsed. They are barely a shadow of last year’s Texan team.

next man up

26. Oakland Raiders (21) – Battled well, early, on the road in a loud stadium. A second half pick sealed it, another Golden turnover that killed any shot in a very energetic KC homefield.

27. New York Jets (23) – gave a good effort early but Geno turned in another ‘rookie’ QB effort. D got pushed around. It was ugly.

28. Atlanta Falcons (28) – It should only be able to get better now. They will be hard pressed to do any worse after their bye. The injury to Julio Jones tho probably won’t help them.

29. Minnesota Vikings (24) – Amazingly flat. Cassel and the rest of offense was bad, the D showed no focus. Outside tragedy was supposed to unite the team and let them gel. It didn’t. It was ugly, they got thrashed and I think I hear Freeman’s cell ringing…anyone wanna trade for Ponder?

vikings

30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (26) – Offense was well led by their rookie QB but the D was incapable of making any stops. They are rapidly returning to their part of the ‘Bay of Pigs’ era.

31. Jacksonville Jaguars (31) – Played as well as they could. Made mistakes but Blackmon was great, their D was ok. Another game effort by a team who is showing signs of life.

32. New York Giants (32) – Run offense was strong. D can’t cover fast, tall or competent Wide Receivers. Eli’s picks are pure gold. 0-6. They defeat themselves.

Eli Manning

MR N’s NFL Week 3 Power Poll‏

1. Denver Broncos (1) – Workmanlike, Never in doubt, Manning led Offense was machine like but we did see there may be Left Tackle issues in the future and the D still can be beat…speedy linebackers and smallish D line only dominate certain specific Offenses like the Raiders.

2. Seattle Seahawks (2) – A very impressive effort against a crap team. They could have easily mailed it in but instead blew them away in an impressive fashion.

3. New Orleans Saints (5) – Brees led a good O. It was a really solid win by a very dangerous team.

4. Chicago BEARS (6) – The offense had trouble producing any passing yards. The D either got torched or got turnovers and lucky bounces played no small roll in a blowout win.

5. Miami Dolphins (8) – After a slow start the Fish D tightened and Tannehill drove to a late come from behind lead and they got a great win. Another big test to show how real they are comes in week 4.

6. Indianapolis Colts (13) – Really terrific play on OFF and and a surprisingly good DEF effort. A great win. After the steal deal of the century, this team has no where to go but up and is rapidly becoming Denver’s biggest competition for the AFC crown.

Trent Richardson TD

7. New England Patriots (14) – Brady got it done early. A solid win in what was their best total effort of the year!

8. Green Bay Packers (3) – Rodgers was uncharacteristically struggling early but had a lead. It is completely mind boggling how a team that is supposed to THAT good can get 4 turnovers, in a row, and still lose.

9. Kansas City Chiefs (9) – They are 3 and 0. But, I fear it is a hollow 3-0. The offense is stumbling and only productive against bad D’s. The D has holes and the coaching makes hard to follow calls. Lucky for the mass turnovers which they could barely turn into points. They looked terrible and won going away.

10. Cincinnati Bengals (11) – Turnovers are Gold. They were bad but somehow pulled out a win. Ugly play for most of the game but an impressive win.

11. Baltimore Ravens (12) – Special teams and D carried the team for the first half. Ray Lewis’ number retiring and his impassioned half time speech inspired the Off into the best drive of the year. There should be a spot for Lewis on the coaching staff. He has a mojo that rubs off on a team that’s not very good most of the time.

12. Houston Texans (4) – OFF out of sync early. The Offense was completely stifled by a stout Raven D and that was that. They need to figure out how to score points or they will be looking up at both Indy and Tennessee.

13. Dallas Cowboys (16) – Tore up a bad D early. A solid game by the OFF and DEF gave them a nice win.

14. San Francisco 49ers (7) – They were completely overwhelmed, beat down and humiliated. A Poor offensive showing, a badly beaten D. Serious questions now exist about the viability of this team this season.

15. San Diego Chargers (15) – Mistakes hurt them early. The Bolts battled but after a tough effort, second in a row on the road, they lost a close one.

SD Chargers

16. Atlanta Falcons (10) – Led early but their D blew the lead and once more Matt Ryan could NOT win a game that was in his hands to win.

17. Tennessee Titans (21) – They battled, they took advantage of luck and Locker led them to a superb come from behind win. Very well done.

18. Detroit Lions (22) – Mistakes, errors and bad judgement on D…same old Lions early. The Lions offense was able to do enough to overcome their D issues and get them a win.

19. St. Louis Rams (17) – A team whose D sucks. The O was down so quick they had to over commit to the pass and it was ugly. They have a chance to show what they’ve got in PrimeTime on Thursday night.

20. Arizona Cardinals (19) – Palmer leads a good OFF but the holes in the D were exploited and they couldn’t recover against a great Offense.

21. Buffalo Bills (20) – Were kept in the Game by NYJ penalties and mistakes. In the end Manuel couldn’t make the plays needed to give his team a shot. A rookie QB is allowed a game or two like this one.

22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (18) – No answer to the Patriot passing game. The D was ripped by the ground attack and tore up by Brady. The Offense was whacked by the Pat D. It is overdue time for a change at QB as Freeman slips off into obscurity.

tampa bay

23. Carolina Panthers (31) – Panthers played dominantly early, in the middle and late. The D looked perfect and the O was on point. It is very hard to figure just how good of a win this was as it may have just been that they played a really, really bad team.

24. Oakland Raiders (23) – Pryor showed that his talent is for real. There were a number of positives the Raiders can take from this loss. Denver’s team is built in a way to be Oakland’s kryptonite but that doesn’t mean this team isn’t on the right track finally.

25. New York Jets (29) – Often in control with a good D and some solid O. Geno Smith may have maturity issues and off the field issues but he throws the best deep ball in the AFC East. They nearly self destructed with penalties but they got a win.

26. Cleveland Browns (28) – Unbelievable how Hoyer played so well. Hoyer looked solid and Cleveland made good calls and got a nice win.

27. Washington Redskins (25) – RGIII good in the pocket early. The skins got the rush working. RGIII did all he could in the shape he currently is in but he cannot play D and evidently neither can his defense.

28. Minnesota Vikings (24) – Booed at home and deservedly so. Ok, it is official, they are circling the bowl…next time the game is on the line and you are inside the 5 yard line…here is a hint…RUN AP. Play calling was impossible to understand in 4th Q.

MN Vikings

29. Philadelphia Eagles (26) – A gimmicky team, in the end defined by it’s parts. Turnovers are gold and Mike Vick is Midas in a green shirt. Hard to figure if the D is any good as the KC offense looked really bad.

30. New York Giants (27) – Giants struggled badly on the road. This was the worst game played by them in decades. Horrible. Can’t throw, can’t run, can’t block, can’t tackle, can’t cover. Not a mirage, a bad team.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers (30) – The old group showed more ability on OFF than they had all year. Turnovers = Gold = Loss. Got thumped but played better than they have all year.

32. Jacksonville Jaguars (32) – That was their best effort yet but they have so little talent that it meant they would lose by well over 20 points. Other teams fighting for the last place spot so the Jags really have to suck again to lock down 32.

There you have it! As always I love all thoughts, comments, arguments or agreements. Any opinion is valid and valued! As always I will also except Cash…a job offer from Fox Sports…ok cash…preferably 10’s and 20’s.
